P12: Evaluation of practice reading of script

How appropriate is my pace?

A: It is a good pace but slightly slow, might disengage listeners if it is targeting for a younger audience.

B: In general, I think your pace was appropriate, but not entirely so, because I felt that the beginning reading of the script had more than 3 words a second. However, towards the end, your pace slowed down to almost match the 3 words a second rule.

How appropriate is my tone for the news being presented?

A: Your tone is good, you do not sound monotone, and rather you sound passionate about what you are talking about

B: I think your tone was appropriate for the news being presented, as the news that you presented surrounded knife crime and your tone was serious, which enabled you to suit the tone of the story.

Would you stop and listen to my story? Why?

A: Yes I would because knife crime is an important issue in every society and is newsworthy.

B: Yes I would stop and listen to your story, because I as a teenager living in London also feel strongly about knife crime in London, so there is proximity.

What are the best points or what do you like about my report?

A: The best point about your report is stating that knife crime is on the rise. This makes it more reliable

B: I like the fact that you included the problem of knife crime, but you also included organizations that aim to tackle knife crime in your report, thus this balances out your report and gives listeners and idea where they can go to if they also feel strongly about knife crime.

What improvements could be made on my report?

A: You could just improve by speeding up the pace, other than that everything is perfect!

B: I believe that, on the whole your report was great, but I would suggest you practice more to meet the 3 words a second rule.

P11: Contingency Plan: Update

In my contingency plan, I had decided to contact a police officer or Mr Jordan (sixth form leader of Central Foundation Girls school sixth form), interview either one of them and input their response in my script. However, as I was making my script I realized that I had enough content from my research and The Ben Kinsella Trust charity (who I had contacted and collected information from) to create my report and thus my script. Therefore, I realized that I did not need to contact a police officer or Mr Jordan for more information to create my report.

Script draft 2
The rise in Knife crime
Fahmida Bibi Ali
28/01/16

Teenagers in London say not enough is done to tackle the knife crime in the capital.

They raised the concern following news that the number of teenagers stabbed to death in London increased in 2015.
Here’s Fahmida Ali with the story.

The Metropolitan police say that knife crime in London rose by more than 50 percent in London in 2015.

At the end of last year 15 youths had been murdered by the knife.

Already one teenager has been stabbed to death in 2016. 16-year-old Charilie Kuyutompo was murdered at an East London birthday party on 10th January.

This compares sharply with 8 teen fatalities the previous year.

Following this rising trend the Met say they are monitoring the internet and seizing knives bought on the dark web and found in teenagers’ possession.

However, these young Londoners believe that, that is not enough.

In an exclusive email to Wassup FM, one charity sent advice to both the police and young people.

The Ben Kinsella Trust aims to expose the dangers of knife crime.
They say that gang culture and fear are the main reasons why young people become involved with knives.

They believe the police, schools, families and communities should jointly tackle these issues as a starting point.

P10: Continguency plan

Firstly, for a second voice insert or quote in the script of my radio I have decided to interview a police officer, but if I am unable to contact a police officer, I will be contacting Mr Jordan who is the sixth form leader of Central Foundation Girls school sixth form

The reason for contacting the police officer would be to gain further information on how the Metropolitan Police in London hope to tackle knife crime in the future.

However, if I end up contacting Mr Jordan, I hope to gain further information on how knife crime awareness will be promoted in Central Foundation Girls school Sixth form in the future.

P9: VOX POP recording Uncut

P8: Feedback of practice VOX POP recording

Positives:

  • Content sounded conversational, free flowing and natural
  • Audio quality was good
Negatives:
  • This was not a VOX POP it was just an audio
  • Need minimum of 3 people in recording for it to be called a VOX POP

The rise in Knife crime

Teenagers in London say not enough is done to tackle knife crime and prevent the rise in knife crime as of 2015.

Metropolitan police say that there has been an 18% rise in knife crime in London in 2015.

The Ben Kinsella Trust charity say that “partially gang culture, partially fear” contribute to reasons
why young people become involved with knives.

In the streets of East London I caught up with teenagers who gave their opinions of whether they believe enough has been done to tackle knife crime and what more could be done.

P5: Radio script annotation

This is an example of a good radio script that me and my group annotated. First, we annotated the key features that are conventionally found in radio scripts, such as the slug, the writer and more, so that we could include them in our personal radio scripts. Moreover, this script was helpful in allowing me to understand the importance of the leading sentence, as it generally contains the 5 w's (who, what, when, where and why, which actually comes later in the script) that sum up the story and is used to grab the interest of the listeners. Therefore, I will be using the leading sentence of this script to influence the leading sentence of my script.
