Analysis of Radio News broadcasts: R1

Analysis of Radio News broadcasts:

Opening and Closing London 94.9 2015: The opening starts with a question about the RSPCA, which seems to be targeted at the audience. After the question is given, a female anchor begins to introduce the time and the name of the radio station, before talking about news headlines that will be discussed in the radio news broadcast. It was live so I did not hear the ending.

Kinds of stories presented: There was news on the health service of the NHS, news on football, politics, London weather and female genital mutilation in London.

Language: Firstly, fast paced music is played and after the background music is played an anchor presents to the audience the top stories and headlines. Secondly, interviews of people from the public that could provide evidence for the stories being presented. These all were conventional of  radio news broadcasts.

Different forms of presenting information: There were many forms of presenting information, the majority being outside interviews that have most likely been recorded using podcasts. In addition, there was news reading along with interviews between the anchors. There were not many form of presenting information as most of the time the anchor was the person that presented information through a news reading.

Use of Sound: In the beginning, there is the use of background music, while the headlines are presented by the anchor. The background music was fast paced and matched the pace of the anchor presenting the top stories. Moreover, between interviews there were many silences and the use of voice was prominent.

Radio News London 1967: The opening of this old news broadcast had very dramatic news, that presented had singers presenting the name of the radio news station. Secondly, after the presentation of the radio station, an anchor began speaking and mentioned the date and time of radio broadcast along with the headlines of the broadcast. Lastly, the radio ended with the same dramatic news being played and mentioning his name to end the radio broadcast.

Kinds of stories presented: There was news on the weather, news on the British navy and news on the civil rights movement in America.

Language: This radio news was conventional for having the anchor presenting the headlines of news at the beginning of the broadcast. Secondly, the radio news broadcast was conventional in its period of time for having a very theatrical and dramatic opening. This Radio news broadcast was very conventional in representing civil rights activists as lunatics and being very racist towards them. However, it was unconventional in the idea that the news anchor presented his name at the end of the broadcast.

Different forms of presenting information: During this radio broadcast only one form of presenting information was used and this was news reading, which was conducted by the anchor.

Use of sound: There was the use of dramatic background music and the use of sound effects, such as a beeping sound. This was used to signify that the anchor is moving on to the next headline. Lastly, there was also the use of voice. 

BBC London Radio 2011: The opening of this fairly new radio news broadcast, the broadcast immediately starts off with a female anchor presenting her name, the time and the name of the news broadcast. The closing of the broadcast had the anchor referring the news to another anchor and the use of background music.

Kinds of stories presented: One story is presented and the story is about faith in London.

Language: It is very conventional in the idea that at the beginning of the radio broadcast, the anchor presents the name of the radio station, the time of the broadcast and the anchor mentioning their name. However, this radio broadcast was unconventional in not presenting the headlines, but going straight in to a story.

Different forms of presenting information: There were some forms of presenting news. For example, there was the obvious news reading, there were also outside interviews and inside interviews. Use of sound effects, voice, music and silence. 

Use of sound: There was no background music in the beginning of the news broadcast and most of the time there was the use of voice. However, at the end of the broadcast background music was played to end the broadcast.

From this research, i have understood that British radio broadcast has changed since 1967, in the way that anchors present information and the how background music is used. For example, in the radio broadcast from 1967, there was the use of dramatic and theatrical music, while in the two modern radio broadcasts, background music tends to be serious and down beat.
